It’s a Small World

I built my first website back in 1995. It was about sugar gliders, and was the first of millions of sites to come that would be devoted to those intriguing little creatures. It actually even made Netscape Cool Site of the Day one time. Of course, back then there were only about 37 websites in the entire universe, so I guess that wasn’t really a terribly impressive accomplishment. That same year, some guy copied my site, put his name on it, and printed it out, complete with an introduction thanking … Continue reading

SplashPress Media / GeeksBlog Plagiarism

Well, I gave them a chance. They have completely ignored me. So here I am once more, asking for your help to spread the word about plagiarism. This post on their GeeksBlog website is using one of my dad’s copyrighted images, without the courtesy of giving him credit or even so much as a linkback to his website. (You can see it with the poem it was created for by clicking here.) I e-mailed SplashPress Media (which claims the copyright to the GeeksBlog site and its contents) them over a … Continue reading

Sugar Cookies

Since I have 4 essays due this week, along with something like 13 chapters and 6 articles of assigned reading, I decided today would be a good time to bake cookies. (It’s nursing school logic. Just accept it.) A couple of weeks ago I realized that I had become addicted to Lofthouse cookies. I was having cravings for them, and looking for excuses to go to Fred Meyer so I could snag a package. The things cost like $4 for 10 cookies, though, which is just ‘way too expensive to … Continue reading

Early Attraction

I ran across this old photo of Ryan (aka Wonko) on my Flickr site tonight, and was struck once more at how early in life some aspects of one’s personality become obvious. My old IBM PCjr (shown in this photo) came with two keyboards; the original “chicklet” keyboard, which was a nightmare for non-touch-typists, and a regular keyboard with actual letters printed on the keys for normal people. Both were infrared — a keyboard cable cost an extra $25. Since the only way the system would fit on my desk … Continue reading

Back to School. Again.

Only 107 days to go until graduation… I’ve almost made it into the double digits! Have I mentioned that I’ve been dreading this term a little bit? That’s because through past terms I’ve watched some political struggles between faculty factions being played out with the seniors as their pawns, and I hate political games, and I hate being sucked into them against my will, especially when it’s costing me some $30K/year. Academia is definitely NOT a consumer-oriented world! We’re more hostages than consumers, especially now, because we’ve put so much … Continue reading

Vignettes

It’s the end of a 12-hour shift at the geriatric psychiatry unit where I work. I’m standing in the hallway waiting for night shift to come out of report. A very delusional woman is conversing brightly with a very confused gentleman who thinks he’s at the bowling alley (but he can’t find his bowling shoes). “Here,” she says, patting the air to her right. “You can sit by me.” She’s totally convinced there’s a chair there, and keeps urging him to sit, and he’s looking, trying to figure out what … Continue reading

Why I Love My Job

One of the things I love most about my job is that you just never know what is going to happen next. It’s never boring! Here’s just one small example of what I mean. The setting: The geropsych unit where I work, in “Fred’s” room, where he’s just waked up and I’m helping him dress for breakfast. Fred: “Have you seen my brother?” Me: “I didn’t know you had a brother.” Fred: “Sure, I have a brother. Unless he’s dead… He could be dead, I guess. Shoot, he’d be in … Continue reading
